Mark Franek, Dean of Students

Mark Franek is the dean of students and an English teacher at the William Penn Charter School in Philadelphia.  Originally founded in 1689, Penn Charter is one of the oldest schools in the country and it is the oldest Quaker (Friends) school in the United States.  Penn Charter currently serves over 875 boys and girls in the Philadelphia area and surrounding region.

Mark Franek’s articles have appeared in numerous newspapers and magazines, such as the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Christian Science Monitor, the Baltimore Sun, the Chicago Tribune, Educational Leadership, and the English Journal.

He writes often about educational issues - including issues of equality, diversity, and freedom of speech - issues and ideals which often take their first tentative breaths in America’s classrooms.

Mark Franek graduated from Duke University with a B. A. in English in 1991.  He is finishing up his doctorate in Educational Leadership at the University of Pennsylvania.  He loves to write almost as much as he loves to teach.

Please check out his site, http://markfranek.wordpress.com/  for more information about what he’s up to in his classroom and beyond.
