7 8 With all the publicity in recent years, women of all ages are more and more conscious of breast cancer and how to discover it in the early stages while it is still treatable. Not a great deal has been said, however, about taking positive steps to avoid it in the first place. Nutritionists at Queens College of the City University of New York in Flushing have done a study of over 42,000 women with an average age of 61, a prime age to develop breast cancer. The women were followed for almost six years as part of a breast cancer detection project. Their results were just published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The study confirms that a healthy, balanced diet can cut the overall death rate. They state their findings:
An article head reads "Eating Recommended Foods Associated with Decrease in Risk of Mortality for Women: Dietary patterns including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy and lean meats are key." The researchers carefully took in other factors such as smoking, drinking alcohol, overweight and other health risks. Comparing like persons within these classes, the healthy eaters died at a rate of 30% below those whose diet was deficient in the important foods. This includes breast cancer, naturally. Don't short yourself! Learning to eat (and enjoy) a healthier diet beats surgery, chemotherapy and radiation by several country miles! What is your risk of developing breast cancer? An indication can be calculated-- confidentially-- at the Breast Cancer Risk Calculator site by Dr. Steven Halls, a radiologist.
