Good question! This is a discussion that has taken place several times in this household. My son Mark believes sushi is manna from heaven, more or less. He's been known to eat so much of it at one sitting, with fiery wasabi and all the trimmings, that the Japanese restaurant owners were profoundly impressed, sort of "adopted" him and began inviting him into the kitchen to eat with the family. I won't eat it, myself.
Part of my problem is that I have dressed out many a fish that had live parasites. Second, I'm a little suspicious of fish anyway (although I realize it is one of the healthiest forms of protein) because of the incredible pollution being poured into our streams, lakes and oceans, which then becomes concentrated in the bodies of the fish we eat. It has to stop, or we'll completely poison our oceans and ultimately ourselves. It's not necessary; there's other alternatives. But I realize the benefits of eating fish outweigh the risks. See Ten Commandments for Eating Fish. Also there are more links at Sushi Calories & Safety.

So would I, probably, if I ate sushi and counted calories, neither of which are part of my daily repertoire. Fortunately, that's your job, not mine.
As a registered dietitian and what's more, a specialist in your field (MS is a Master of Science degree, RD is Registered Dietitian, and CNSD is a Certified Nutrition Support Dietitian), I'm sure I don't have to tell you that calorie counts vary greatly in any given dish depending on the ingredients, and sushi is made with a very wide variety of ingredients.
In general, sushi is lower in calories than most foods. Seafood is relatively low calorie, as are many of the other common ingredients. In order to calculate them, one would have to measure each ingredient, calculate it separately, add them all up and divide by servings or pieces.
This sounds like a daunting task, but if you make your own sushi, There are recipe software programs that make it easy, providing tools that access the FDA's official database to calculate the calories, sodium, sugars and nutrients in any of your favorite recipes.
If you eat out at sushi bars or restaurants, I think it would be impossible to have more than an educated guess, which I'm sure you can do if you put your mind to it. You are better qualified to do that than I am. I don't even eat sushi.

Thank you for your response. FYI, after searching the web I have found that there are approximately 300 calories in a sushi roll (8 pieces).

| Thanks for keeping us informed. Since sushi is so popular and there's so many people that do count calories, this will be valuable information for them.

I just came across a website, Ask the Dietitian, where someone asks about the calories in sushi. The answer was:
Sushi (100 grams) with vegetables and fish contains 238 calories, 9 grams protein, less than 1 gram of fat, 48 grams of carbohydrate and 1.5 grams of fiber.
As I stated before, I am sure this can vary slightly according to the individual ingredients and preparation, but probably not a meaningful amount.
Obviously a good dietary choice, nutritionally, but....

| Regarding sushi calories, I think it's important to consider what TYPE of sushi we're eating here. Salmon or mackerel sushi will naturally have more calories than tuna. The avocado in California rolls makes things tricky. Grilled eel also will have more than some other lean fishes. So I'm not too sure what the 300 or 238 cal previous posts are referring to.

| You're right on the mark. I think somewhere I stated that it depends on the ingredients. Asking simply for the calories in sushi is like asking for calories in stew or salad as a generality. Perhaps the respondent was giving an average calorie count. In any case, the calorie count of most foods is less important than their nutritional value, and in the case of sushi, I suspect that the higher caloried varieties might have more basic nutrients like Omega 3.
