Hey Jo. i think you may be right about the church's name where my brother and I attended kindergarten. The old photo I have of his graduation does show lots of steps and white pillars with all the kids wearing white caps and gowns. I do think I remember there being a basement. I was chosen to sing a solo at a Christmas program and I can almost envision being taken to an area like that by the singing teacher to be individually trained on a frequent basis. (Did me no good though as I froze during my solo at the program and couldn't remember the words to Frosty The Snowman). Aren't everyone's memories amazing? Barb

Yes, it's still there.  They had to demolish the old one and rebuild, but it's very much the same.  Back in the 60's and '70's the floors creaked and swayed alarmingly, so it really had to be done.   It's very much the same as it was, though, but sturdier.  If you go the Google map and put in 3600 NW 17th Ave Miami, then go south, you can see the front and the surroundings.

I'll never forget one of my last trips to the pharmacy, we have to use Walgreen now because of insurance, etc.  It was back about 30-some years ago.  We had a dog that was in season - you'll see why this becomes relevent.

A couple times we arrived too late and the glass door onto the alley was locked, with a grille.  Break-ins and armed robberies had increased.  A huge male German Shepard was closed in overnight and threw himself at the door viciously, splattering the door with saliva and biting at the doorpost.  During the workday, he was kept in the back in the pharmacy department.

We had a sick kid and arrived with prescription in hand just a little before closing.  The pharmacist said he had a couple others to fill and to wait.  We went over to the middle of the store, and knelt down by the record rack to browse.  The pharmacist somehow forgot we were there and preparing to close, let the dog out.   He came on the run, ready to do damage, until he smelled our female on my clothes, I guess.  By the time the pharmacist got there to see what the problem was, the dog was happily humping away.  We were rigid, let me tell you.  They were embarassed, the dog was frustrated.....

No dogs in the store when I was a little girl.:) Great story.   Do you by any chance remember a dentist Dr Sid Callahan?  They lived behind us in a 2 story house, and would come to our house during hurricanes.  I had a huge little girl crush on their son Sid JR.  He was probably 7 or 8 yrs older, and I thought he was wonderful  He thought I was a pest.  We also went to the Drs Rentz for medical care.  Allapattah Baptist is on 17th Ave, isn't it?

Thanks for this wonderful forum.

Wow, what a find! I love this forum. I have only been here a few minutes, yet the memories are pouring out of my mind.

I was born in 1957 in Miami. I lived in the Allpatah area until 1973. I first went to Kindergarten at Allapattah Baptist Church. I also remember the Live & Let Live Drugstore! That drugstore had a delivery service, which was not a common thing. On that same block I also remember the Jackson Byrons, the 5 & 10 that burned down, Funland Park (79th Street by Northside Shopping Center), Food Fair, Western Auto, and most of all I remember racing slot cars at Orange Blossom Hobbies. Long before I was able to race the cars, Orange Blossom was across the street. I will never forget that train in the window, which ran when you put your hand up against the glass!

I too went to the Royal Castle.  I was a member of the Allapattah YMCA, and I also was a Junior Lifeguard at that Y. During the summer months I worked there as a Junior Counselor. We had many fun trips to different areas of Miami. As a child, the summer trips at the Y took me to many of the city parks, including Sewell Park, Greynolds, Simpson Park, and other places such as the Miami Seaquarium, and the old Crandon Park Zoo, which was beautiful. I loved the little amusement park that was by the zoo.  The Allapattah Y was later closed on 28th Street and moved to it's current location on NW 17th Avenue.  During that move they lost the pool, so we used to go to the North Dade Y to use their pool.  By that time I was old enough to learn SCUBA, but I wasn't able to do it at the Y because they did not have the pool and ended up cancelling their SCUBA program.  The resulting park on the SW corner of NW 28th Street and 17th Avenue, came out beautiful. On that corner was a beautiful building covered with vines, it housed Exotic Gardens, a local florist. (not sure if that company still exists).

After 1973 I moved to the Westchester area of Miami, of which I have no fond memories of. Westchester had very little going on, the Loew's and Coral Way Drive Ins and Lums, end of story!

In 1979 I moved to St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands. I lived there until 1984. Once I left the USVI, I came back to Florida, however I have lived here in Pompano Beach since.

It's funny how I found this forum. I was doing a search on Miami Stadium. Sadly I saw the end of that great place and the condition it was in prior to it's demise a few years back.  I could not believe how run down and abused that piece of lovely architecture ended up. It is obvious that the City of Miami abandoned the stadium a long time before it was demolished. What a shame that our stadium went out that way. As a child I went to many ball games there. I saw many great players, Clemente, Powell, Robinson, Mantle, just to name a few. The Miami Marlins played there for a while. So many great parts of that stadium were not known to anyone, so I am in the process of collecting a series of pictures to put together a pictorial of the area as a whole. I want to setup a website solely dedicated to pictures. I am hoping to get enough attention to generate pictures.

In my attempt to collect pictures of the Allapatah area I have not been able to get pictures of the following:

Jackson Byrons

Western Auto

Original Orange Blossom Hobby Store

Pictures of the slot tracks inside the hobby store

Strand Theatre

Santa Clara School

Robert E. Lee School

Anyone who has any of these pictures.  Please feel free to contact me via email: BMCTackle@Comcast.net There is a huge following of local theatres on http://www.cinematreasures.org Pictures of the old Strand Theatre on NW 7th Avenue would be a welcomed addition to that website. It's amazing how much attention that theatre has gotten.  A lot of us grew up in Allapattah, but most of us were quite young during it's hey day, I just hope some of you have access to pictures of the area.  A website dedicated to this wonderful part of Miami would be really cool. Like this forum, it will bring fond memories to many of us who grew up in the area.

Best Regards to All,
Louis

I wouldn't be surprised if you went to school with my daughter, Beth.  She went to Comstock, YMCA, qualiied for Scuba also.  She was a crossing guard at Comstock, the first girl to do so.  She also had a collection of snakes and often took them to school by request to visit different classrooms and give little lectures on them.  She was also born in 1957.  She went to the Lutheran kindergarten, then the old Comstock, of course, then Robert E Lee and Allapattah Jr. High.

Allapattah has, like so many areas, gone through many many changes over the years, many provoked by hurricanes, others by changing demographics.  Exotic Garden gave up a while after their greenhouses were wiped out by a hurricane in the early 60's, and moved to Homestead.  I don't know how they are doing it now, because of big chains, etc.  In the past two or three years many of the old landmarks have been torn down and condos and large apartment buildings have gone up.

Bess,

If she was at the Y, I must know her. I went to private school. I did attend summer school at Comstock one year. I remember one of the days I went to school someone had broken into the school, that was the first time I ever saw fingerprints, the detectives were dusting the windows for prints. I think I was in 1st grade or 2nd, but it wasn't any later than that.  I attended St. Peter and Paul School on SW 12 Avenue in Miami. I know it was one hell of a distance to travel, but my mother insisted I went to school there.

During the time I went to the Y, I was living at 2626 NW 13th Avenue, and then later at 1442 NW 24th Street, just down the street from where the Y is now. I was involved with that Y until 1972. A fellow by the name of Steve was in charge.

To give you an idea where I lived, to the south of our house was a totally industrial area, this is where Swindal Powell, Suki Eggs, and all the other companies were.  To the east of our house was what once was a hotel, then later turned into 4 very large and long apartments. I don't remember the exact name, but there was a sign there. I think the address was 1438 NW 24th Street. I went by the old neighborhood and much to my surprise the house I lived in is now a duplex, I have no idea how they managed to turn that into a duplex, but it must be very interesting on the inside. That house had beautiful mahogany walls on the inside, it was very unique.

I never did the SCUBA program at the Y. By the time I was old enough, the pool was no longer, and the program was no longer. Instead I went to Scuba School at the old New England Divers which was located in Wynwood. I attended SCUBA School in 73, New England Divers provided a NAUI certification.

Best Regards to All,

Louis

there was also an ice cream store directly across from "live and let live" and the "wollard boarding house" which sat diagonally to the intersection. it presently is a latin restaurant i believe, with an addition placed on the front of the building, you can still see the original square, diagonaly placed, structure over the roof line. i have a pic of that store somewhere.

Looking at the list of pictures Louis is looking for....they're all bright and clear in my memory!  The old Orange Blossom Hobbies train window was like a magic thing, wasn't it?  We went to church across the street at Allapattah Methodist, and we'd run over to the hobby shop whenever we could to watch the train.  I went to Santa Clara and Robert E. Lee- I do still have my 6th grade class picture- Mr. Washington was our teacher- everyone was terrified of him!
Louis-  We relocated to the Westchester area also- right before high school (1970)- and I agree it was a terrible move.  Life, even as a minority in a changing neighborhood, was so much better in Allapattah.  We rode our bikes everywhere- and if your bike couldn't get you where you wanted to go, the #25 or 36 bus was just 25 cents and a transfer away!
I remember when my friend moved to Palm Springs North- In Junior High!- my parents let me ride (alone) through liberty city to go see her.  I had to transfer buses right in front of a housing project somewhere around 79th st.  A little white girl, sitting on a bus bench, obviously out of place- and I didn't even realize that was not the norm!
We lived at 1451 n.w. 31st st., but my dad's mail route was from 29th st to the railroad tracks, between 12th and 17th ave.  He was the kind of mailman that smoked a cigar on his route, took dog biscuits to feed his canine buddies, and brought home assorted fruit in season from all his "customers".
My good friend, Peggy Whitmore lived near you- Her dad sold produce out of a pick-up truck.  I always thought that was pretty cool.
Do you remember "Albert's" grocery? A little store on 29th st. and 14th ave.?  We'd go there to get PeeWee sodas.... Albert was a nice guy...always really friendly to us kids.  We'd collect enough soda bottles so we could afford a treat.
I could go on and on....it was the best childhood ever!
I'll try to find some pictures for you...

Too bad we can't plug in "memory sticks" into our heads and download those pictures to share, isn't it?

Wasn't Storyland a baby/juvenile furniture store on Flagler Street around 10th Avenue, across the street from a fire station?

Isn't it amazing how clear those long ago memories are.  I wish I had a picture of the Live & Let Live, but I haven't come up with one yet.

Does anyone else remember Tyler's Restaurant?  We went there often in the 40's.  I can't remember eating anything but the hot roast beef sandwich with gravy and mashed potatoes.  Delicious!  There was a cook there that my Daddy called Marrying Sam, because he had been married 6 times.

Hi,

My name is Charlene and I was born in Miami in 1946 at Victoria Hospital.  We lived at 1384 NW 29 Terrace.  I went to Allapattah Elementary Grades 1-7, and Miami Jackson grades 8-12. I should have gone to Santa Clara but my uncle lived across the street from Allapattah Elementary and I think my mom and dad must have used his address. Did anyone have Mrs. Smith for 1st grade?  She was so wonderful.  I remember Policeman's Park very well.  I had a huge crush on the guy that ran the carousel and they always played my favorite song "Mr. Sandman" while we were riding.  Policeman's Park wasn't very far from Exotic Gardens as I recall.  Also loved going to the Dressle's Dairy for Tutti Frutti ice cream.  Rustic roller rink was a regular hangout.  Loved the outdoor rink.  Remember when they did the Mexican Hat Dance.  Such fun.  I also remember Royal Castle.  There was nothing like those hamburgers and birch beer.  Live and Let Live is of course an institution.  I remember the huge weight scale--I never would get on if someone was looking.  Remember when you could get into the Regent Theater for 6 RC Cola caps?  We would go to Albertson's, the corner store and get the caps out of the cola machine where the bottles had been opened.  The owner was happy to help us.  Anyone remember Johnny Albertson?  Remember Manor Park Pool?  I learned to swim there--lifeguard was named Walter, I think.  What about the Olympia Theater downtown with the stars in the ceiling.  Does anyone remember Mooney Iron Works on 29th Street and 13 avenue?  All such good memories.

I was born at Doctors Hospital in the Gables in 1954, and left Miami for college in Tennessee in 1974.

I remember Tylers in the Gables next to the Riviera Theater. They had excellent banana bread and homemade French dressing.

My Grandparents lived down the street behind Orange Blossom Hobbies, the coral rock house with the fruit groves behind it, and I also raced my slot car on their tracks.

We used to walk over to the athletic field at Jackson High and play football.

I want so badly to try a birch beer again, it has been sooooo long.

I love this forum, because I too spent so much tim in Allapattah, even though I grew up near Suniland in South Dade.

My first job was at Publix in Suniland and then at Burdines in Dadeland

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading all these postings.  I was born in Miami, 1949.  I grew up at  3080 NW 4 street.  I swam on the team at Allapattah Y, and attended Jackson for 2 years.  Then I transfered to Miami Springs High when it was built.  When I was on the swim team, at Jackson, Bob Vila was also on the team.  Thanks for all the great memories.

I used to spend hours with my best friend Julio racing slot cars at the hobby shop, my grandmother  and my best friend lived just down the street, I lived about 6 blocks away. We would build our own cars, remember the COX controllers they would get hot after awhile. What schools did you go to?

I went to Melrose, R. E. Lee and left @ 9th grade to Citrus Grove Jr. ending up in Miami High.

I lived at 3703 NW 22th CT. from 1966 - 1974

I'm planning to take a day go around the whole area and take photos to add to this post
