Don't know how I found this but what memories it brings back. We didn't live in Allapattah but a little north  NW 18 ave and 56th street.  We live there from about 1947 until 1954. My sisters and brothers went to Miami Jackson and graduated in 1950 & 1951.  I was still in elementary school when we moved to an area just outside Opa Locka and North Miami  NW 18th court and 127 Street

I went to Orchard Villa Elementary School from 1st grade to 6th grade, it was somewhere near about NW 57th Street and 12th Ave.  I remember Allapattah so well. I use to ride the horses at the pony rink just the other side of Miami Jackson, my favorite horse was Charlie. I also remember Funland and finally being brave enough to ride the mouse just once.

Does anyone remember the drive-in restaurant near funland with the curb side service where the carhops wore the very bright short uniforms and were on skates.

Remember the Royal Castle so well and shopping at Jackson Bryons and have lunch in Woolworths and the drugstore. Once I started school and reached about the 3rd grade was allowed to ride the bus down to Allapattah with my friends and go to the movies on Saturdays. Sometimes we spent our return fare at Royal Castle and had a long walk home.:D

I can so remember all the places mentioned as When I was in Jr & Sr High use to ride the bus over to Little River on Sat to go to the movies and shop with my babysitting money.

First afterschool job was at Grables Bakery on NW Th St  and in my Senior Year worked at Leonard Bros Transfer Co.  Then after high school worked at the main office of Howard Johnsons Restaurant.

We moved to 127th street half way through the 6th grade where I knew no one after going to school with all the same kids for 6 years.

I finished elementary at West View Elementary, then on to the "brand new" Hialeah High in the 7th, then to Madison Jr High in the 8th and to West View Jr High in the 9th (we were their 1st graduating class) then back to Hialeah High for the 10th, 11th and 12th.

Love to skate at Opa Locka Skating Rink and Skateland over in North Miami. Finally left the area in 1962 and went back for visits till my parents moved to Sebring area in about 1966. Haven't been back down that way since.

So thanks for bring back some wonderful memories.

Dianne

Hi Dianne, just read your message and was inspired to write my first reply. The name of the place with the carhops next to Funland was called Frank-n- Bun. We used to go inside, put nickles in the jukebox and dance away. My favorite 45 to dance too was the song "Stay" by Marice Williams.
From 1947 to 1961 I lived on NW 52 St. and 21 Ave. went to Earlington Heights Elem. , then to Allapattah Jr. High for 7 th. grade. Then we moved to NW 102 St and 31 Ave. and went to Madison Jr. High and then on to Central for High School. We have a Madison Reunion. in Oct every year in Ocala, classes 1956- 1964. Let me know if you want more info or a contact list?
My best memories are of the Allapattah area, riding my bike all over town free as a bird, never worried about anyone getting me. Swiming at Manor Park Pool, the highest diving board in my world and me jumping off of it at age nine. How about the sliding boards in the park area? That was a thrill too. Just walking home from school was fun, picking cherries off the cherries bushes, stealing mangos off of trees and then running as fast as you can! We had a park right around the corner of my house, 51 st. and 21 ave. It was a huge field with all kinds of trees, we played softball, hide-n-seek and climbed rubber trees.
I can remember that Miami Jackson was open for fun classes all summer long for everyone. I spent many of days there. This is a wonderful web site. Carol Bishop Handley

Would love the information on Madison Jr High. When I lived on NW 56th Street my very best friend from the day we moved in until we were separated by moving was Leila Louise Huiet. She only lived 2 doors down. We got together again at Madison a couple of years later (the 1st year they opened) but they then built West View and I went there in the 9th. And of course we went to different High Schools. Miami Central wasn't opened when I was in school but my sister and my nephews and nieces all went there. Did you know any Carvers or Merricks. Or by chance did you know a guy named Tony Goni.

Oh what wonderful memories.

Hi Dianne, I'll need your email address to send you all the info on MJH. Or email me at hand1576@bellsouth.net, put Madison as Subject. The names you mentioned don't ring a bell, I was born 1947 and I think you were born 1942? My sister Kathy Bishop was born in 42 , so I'll ask her. We have quite a few MJH people your age, so I'm hoping you can connect with some old friends. Carol
